Actually, I think I've worked it out. Spam bot somewhere takes part of the Odyssey, and replaces bits with randomly-selected adjectives and verbs to make the text less uniform (and therefore suspicious). Then it posts the text, along with some spam ad, to a whole bunch of sites as a comment.

This explains why all the results have titles that have nothing to do with the text, and why most of the results look like blogs. The only thing it doesn't explain is why (almost) none of the pages are loading now. Hmm.

After looking at the Google cache for some of the results, looks like they're actually just link farms. Mystery solved!
